All about Magento

Magento is a feature-rich ecommerce platform built on open-source technology that provides online merchants with unprecedented flexibility and control over the look, content and functionality of their ecommerce store.

Magento is designed to be completely saleable and backed by a huge support network, Magento offers companies the ultimate ecommerce solution. Even the most basic ecommerce websites need to be completed to a high standard to get the most out of the web. Magento can provide the customer with an easy journey that is both secure and issue free.

Magento History

Magento officially started development in early 2007. In August 2007 the first public beta version was released. Varien, the company behind Magento was working with osCommerce initially. Varien had originally planned to fork osCommerce but instead decided to rewrite it as Magento.

Within the first few years of development Magento quickly picked up Open Source Software Awards and Sourceforge Community awards for the platform.

In 2010 eBay took control of 49% of the Magento company Varien and in 2011 took complete control which would merge into its new X.Commerce initiative.
