Plan of attack

Day 1: Monday 14 December 2015

Arrive: Keflavik airport -18.35
Depart: Picked up by ISAK

Arrive: Reykjavik – 20:00

Collect: Landrover Defender 4×4 from ISAK

Collect: Camping supplies

Collect: Food & Supplies for the trip

Depart: Reykjavik – 21:30
Arrive: Seljalandsfoss waterfall – approx. 00:30

Seljalandsfoss is a stunning 60m (200ft) waterfall located in southwest Iceland. The waterfall itself is spectacularly illuminated at night and presents a fantastic opportunity for night photography.

Depart: Seljalandsfoss–01:00
Arrive: Downed U.S. Navy Douglas DC-3 Cargo plane – 02:00

On the 24th November 1973, a U.S Navy Douglas DC-3 Cargo plane ran out of fuel and was forced to make an emergency landing on the Sólheimasandur black sand beaches of southern Iceland. The pilot and crew survived the crash and were eventually rescued, however, the wreckage of the plane remains to this very day, in what has become its final resting place. This dramatic scene provides a unique opportunity to shoot a macabre, apocalyptic setting that is atmospheric, contrasting and laden with melancholy.

This site is where we will make camp for the night, allowing for both long-exposure night-time and early morning sunrise shooting of the crash site.

Day 2 Tuesday 15 December 2015

Depart: Douglas DC-3 Cargo Plane Crash Site: 08:00
Arrive: Vik, South Iceland: 08:30

Breakfast

Depart: Vik, South Iceland: 9.30
Arrive: Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon: 14:00

The glacier lagoon at Jökulsárlón is one of the most explicit visual reminders of just how fragile the world we live in really is. The lake itself is relatively ‘recent’ and is a direct result of climate change. Large chunks of ice break off the Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier and flow into the lagoon, providing stunning visual effects as the light glances off their surface. This site provides a perfect opportunity for both long-expose shots and time-lapse videos.

Depart: Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon: 17:00
Arrive: Höfn, South East Iceland: 19:00

Höfn is an Icelandic fishing and harbour town located in southeast Iceland and provides beautiful scenic views of Vatnajökull Glacier.

Day 4 Thursday 17 December 2015

Depart: Dettifoss – 12:00
Arrive: Grjotagja – 14:00

Getting to Grjotagja

From Reykjahlíð (village East of lake MYvatn) take road 1 towards the East (Egilsstaðir). After about 1 km take exit togravel road 860 where Grjótagjá is clearly indicated. This is accessible to 2WD and there is a large parking in front.

Below are pictures of the right entrance. As you can see there are big rocks that fell off, allowing us to admire the work of nature. Be careful as the roof is not stable.
At the bottom of both entrances you can fit 3 people to admire and take pictures so if a group arrives at the same time as you, you might have to wait a long time before getting inside.

Depart: Grjotagja – 16:30
